Fertilizing Built for Calgary Lawns
Ask any Calgary lawn guy what separates a great lawn from an average one, and the answer isn’t the mower — it’s the fertilizer program. You can mow a weak lawn perfectly every week and it’ll still look tired. But feed the soil properly across our short 5-month growing season, and that same lawn turns into a thick, deep-green carpet your neighbors notice.
We’ve been running customized fertilizing programs for Calgary homeowners for 6 years, and we’ve seen every soil condition our city has to throw at a lawn — alkaline clay in the northeast, leaner sandy pockets out west, new-build fill soil in places like Seton, Walden, and Livingston.
Our Calgary Fertilizer Program
Our standard program is 4 applications per season, timed to our actual climate — not some generic zone-5 calendar:
- Spring Greener (late April – mid May) — wakes the lawn up with a balanced feed and pre-emergent crabgrass control if needed
- Early Summer Feed (June) — slow-release nitrogen to fuel the peak growth weeks
- Summer Strength (mid-July) — low-nitrogen formula that supports root depth without burning during drought stress
- Fall Winterizer (late September – October) — the most important application of the year. Potassium-heavy to push root growth before snow hits and prevent winterkill
Why Calgary Needs a Custom Approach
- Our alkaline soil ties up iron — that’s why so many Calgary lawns look pale green even when they’re “fed”
- Chinook thaws can trick grass into early growth, then freeze it back — fall winterizer is what protects the crown
- Watering restrictions mean nitrogen has to be slow-release or you waste money on a flush of growth with no roots
- UV at altitude burns cheap fertilizers — we use formulations that are stable in our intensity
Organic & Eco-Friendly Options
If you’ve got kids, pets, or just prefer gentler products, we run a parallel program with organic granular feeds and kelp-based liquid supplements. Pricing’s a bit higher but the results speak for themselves — especially on lawns that have been “chemical-only” for years.
What Makes Our Fertilizing Different
No generic spray-and-go. We check soil pH, note thatch levels, flag thin areas for overseeding, and adjust your next application based on what we see. Everything gets applied at the correct rate — over-fertilizing burns lawns, and we’d rather have a customer for 10 years than a one-time job gone wrong.
