Top Dressing — The Quiet Upgrade That Transforms Calgary Lawns
Top dressing is the service almost nobody asks for by name — and the one that makes the biggest long-term difference to a Calgary lawn. It’s the slow, unflashy work of spreading a thin layer of premium compost or compost/sand blend across your entire lawn. No drama, no overnight transformation. Just a steadily healthier, thicker, more resilient turf every year you do it.
We’ve been top dressing Calgary lawns for 6 years, and it’s one of our favorite services because the results compound. A property that’s been top dressed three seasons in a row is a different lawn than one that hasn’t.
What Top Dressing Actually Does
A ¼” to ½” layer of finely-screened compost is spread evenly across your lawn and worked into the canopy. Over the next few weeks, it:
- Boosts organic matter — most Calgary soils are low (2–4% when healthy lawns need 5%+)
- Improves drainage and water retention simultaneously (yes, both)
- Feeds soil microbes that turn fertilizer into available nutrients
- Levels minor dips and bumps — great for uneven yards
- Buffers soil pH slowly downward — critical for our alkaline soils
- Fills aeration holes with rich material when paired with core aeration
The Magic Combo: Aerate + Overseed + Top Dress
If we had to pick one “killer service” for Calgary lawns, this is it. All three, in the same visit, is what actually transforms a struggling lawn into a showpiece:
- Core aerate to open up soil contact and pull plugs
- Overseed with the right Calgary blend for your yard
- Top dress with ¼” of premium compost to cover seed, hold moisture, and fill aeration holes
One visit. Two or three weeks later, you can see it. By the next summer, your lawn is a different lawn.
Why Calgary Soils Especially Need This
- New-build fills (Seton, Livingston, Mahogany, Cornerstone, Legacy) often have only 2” of topsoil over compacted construction subgrade. Top dressing is how you slowly build real topsoil.
- Older lawns (Acadia, Haysboro, Killarney, Hillhurst) have often been mowed and fertilized for decades with no soil inputs, and the organic matter has been steadily depleted.
- Alkaline pH responds well to top dressing with slightly acidic compost over several seasons
- Cool-season turf (Kentucky bluegrass, fescue) thrives in the rich biology that top dressing builds
Our Top Dressing Materials
We don’t use garden-store bagged compost. We source screened, weed-free, municipal-grade compost and custom-blend sand-compost mixes for properties that need leveling. Every material is organic and safe around kids and pets.
When We Top Dress
- Late May through June — best for establishment and microbial activity
- Late August through September — excellent window, pairs perfectly with fall overseeding
- We avoid high summer (too dry) and late October (no microbial activity before freeze)
Commercial & Sports Fields
We also top dress strata commons, HOA green space, and sports fields with specialty sand-compost mixes engineered for drainage and playability. If you manage a property that sees foot traffic, ask us about our athletic-grade top dressing.
