Overseeding & Lawn Seeding for Calgary Lawns
Here’s something most Calgary homeowners don’t realize: your lawn needs new seed every year. Kentucky bluegrass, the workhorse turf of our city, only lives 3–5 years per individual plant before it starts thinning out. If you never overseed, your lawn slowly loses density — that’s why some Calgary lawns go from thick carpet to sparse and weedy by year 6 or 7, even with good care.
We’ve been seeding Calgary lawns for 6 years, and a yearly overseed is one of the highest-ROI things you can do for your turf.
Overseeding vs. New Seeding
- Overseeding — adding fresh seed to an existing lawn to keep it thick, crowd out weeds, and replace aging grass plants. Best paired with core aeration. This is our most common service.
- Full seeding — establishing a new lawn from bare soil. Common on new builds in Seton, Livingston, Cornerstone, and Rangeview where the builder gave you dirt, not grass.
- Patch seeding — targeted repairs on dog-damaged, shaded, or winterkilled areas.
Our Calgary Seed Blends
We don’t use big-box store seed. We use premium blends tuned for our climate:
- Sun-and-drought blend — Kentucky bluegrass + fine fescue + a touch of perennial rye for quick fill
- Shade blend — heavy on creeping red fescue and chewings fescue for tree-shaded yards in mature neighborhoods (Elbow Park, Mount Royal, Altadore, Britannia)
- Eco micro-clover blend — for homeowners who want a lower-water, lower-fertilizer, nitrogen-fixing lawn
- High-traffic / commercial blend — more rye, rugged varieties for strata greens and sports fields
When to Seed in Calgary
- Late August through mid-September is the gold standard — warm soil, cool air, fewer weeds competing
- Late April through May also works, but you’ll fight crabgrass and need to water aggressively through July
- Summer seeding rarely works in Calgary — the heat dries seedlings out before they establish. We’ll tell you honestly rather than take your money for a job that’ll fail.
Why It Works Best With Aeration & Top-Dressing
Seed dropped on compacted lawn mostly washes away or dries out. The aerate + overseed + top-dress combo is the gold-standard service:
- Core aerate to open up soil contact points
- Overseed with the right blend for your lawn
- Top-dress with ¼” of compost to hold moisture and give seedlings a warm nursery
This is what professional lawn care looks like in our climate. We offer it as a bundled “Lawn Rescue” package or as a standalone service.
Aftercare
Seeding without proper aftercare is just feeding the birds. We give you a 2-week watering schedule (light, frequent, morning-only), advice on the first mow (wait until 3”, then sharp blades only), and a check-in visit to confirm establishment.
